Hickenooper was Colorado’s popular two term Mayor in Denver before becoming a poular two term governor. He worked across the aisle to pass pioneering climate change measures, landmark gun safety laws and Medicaid expansion. He also helped transform Colorado’s economy into being the best in the country as rated by some experts. 

In 2008, Colorado transitioned to voting for Democrats in most federal elections. At the state level, Colorado is one of 14 states where Democrats control the state Senate, House and governorship. This underlies the current view that Candidate Hickenlooper has a strong chance to defeat Cory Gardner, the incumbent Republican, who eked out a narrow victory (1.9%) in 2014.
